Lancaster Montessori School’s early childhood program emphasizes learning through all five senses-- not just through listening, watching, and reading. This "prepared" environment allows children to choose from a variety of materials, and learn at their own individual pace, which in turn fosters independence and growth. LMS offers an enriched curriculum including exercises in practical life, sensorial, mathematics, reading, language, grace/courtesy, science, geography, history, fine arts, humanities, foreign languages and music. Our Montessori trained faculty are selected carefully for their love of teaching and respect for the Montessori method.
The study of the states, continents, bodies of water, as well as the exploration of individual countries allows the child an opportunity to become aware, understand, and appreciate the history and diversity of world cultures, the reality of human interdependence, and the need for world cooperation.
The materials for mathematics introduces the concept of quality and symbols of quantity using a variety of beads and symbol cards. The child becomes familiar with the numbers as a decimal system including concrete experience with the operation of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. These exercises teach the child to calculate and also provide a deep understanding of how numbers function.
In Science, the children's natural curiosity is stimulated through discovery projects and experiments, helping children draw their own conclusions. The plant and animal kingdoms are studied in an orderly fashion to foster a love and appreciation of all living things.
These materials are designed to sharpen the senses of the young child and enable him/her to understand the many impressions he/she receives through them. Each of the sensorial materials isolates one defining quality such as color, weight, shape, texture, size, sound, and smell.
The young child is attracted to activities that give him/her independence and control of his/her own life. The "prepared" environment allows for the child to engage in activities such as: sweeping, pouring, polishing, preparing snack and dishwashing, as well as basic exercises of "grace and courtesy". Through these exercises, children develop muscular coordination, enabling movement and exploration of their surroundings, concentration, and the persistence to complete a cycle of work. Children enjoy choosing and performing these new exciting activities which in turn, lengthens their attention span and develops critical concentration skills as they work with them repeatedly.
This is a unique private school environment where learning is an exciting possibility of discovery leading to better concentration, motivation, self discipline, and most importantly a love of learning.
